As our community’s leading healthcare system, Forrest Health takes great pride in providing the best possible care for our patients as well as serving local community hospitals. All of the Forrest Health hospitals provide emergency services, but trauma cases that need a higher level of care are transferred to Forrest General Hospital’s Level II Regional Trauma Center. Our trauma center delivers the highest level of care available in the Pine Belt and is a key factor in the success of our overall health system.
Forrest General Hospital’s Level II Trauma Center provides an immediate, organized response by a highly specialized team, 24/7, 365 days a year. Our trauma center is always staffed by board-certified trauma surgeons waiting for a need to arise. The trauma center is also staffed by in-house emergency physicians, an anesthesiologist, and a critical care physician who is available 24-hours a day, and provides 24-hour coverage for neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, maxillofacial, otolaryngology, and urology surgery in addition to interventional radiology services.
Our Level II regional trauma center receives over 2,000 trauma visits per year. As a Level II center we utilize an immediate and organized response in order to meet the needs of patients at moment’s notice, greatly improving their chance for survival. We also offer a specialized trauma follow-up clinic so that patients can see providers who are familiar with their situation and can oversee the recovery process from beginning to end. This means we are able to keep your loved ones nearby during care and recovery.
You may not be ready or prepared when the need for trauma care arises, but we are. As the hub for medical excellence in South Mississippi, Forrest General Hospital will continue to provide the best possible care for our patients and the communities it has served for decades.

Carly Hutchinson was on her way to a Forrest General Spirit Girls event when she was involved in a car accident. She suffered several vertebral compression fractures, but will be out of a brace and back to doing the things she enjoys soon.
"When I got to the ER they told me what was going on , what they were doing, and why. I remember I wanted to know, and they kept me informed."
"I'm bleeding and I can't stop." That's what Felicia Marks heard when she answered a phone call from her father. He had fallen and severed an artery in his hand.
"They explained everything to us. The doctor was more of an on-our-level type of doctor; he explained everything step-by-step. We were on a first name basis by the time he was released to go home.”
“They kept us upbeat, but they were real. They got down on our level to explain things. I can’t tell you what that means to a family that is facing some horrible circumstances. Her progress was being evaluated, and someone was always thinking about where to go next.”
In March 2018, Shelby Hyatt was a passenger in a vehicle that got hit on the side. She was airlifted from the scene with extensive injuries including two fractures to the skull, bleeds in her brain, broken neck, broken back, shattered pelvis, ruptured spleen, and many other broken bones and lacerations.
Forrest General's trauma program supports 13 counties in southeast Mississippi. As the region’s only Level II trauma center, we are the lead facility for the Southeast Trauma Care Region, one of seven trauma regions in Mississippi. This means that if a patient is involved in a severe traumatic event in one of these counties, they will either be brought to Forrest General or stabilized at another hospital in the region and transferred to Forrest General.

The care provided by Forrest General's Level II trauma center is the highest level of care available in south Mississippi, as well as anywhere in the state outside of Jackson.
Our emergency and trauma care teams work closely, not only with their peers but with Emergency Medical Services, other first responders and area medical facilities. Our efforts together are well coordinated across the continuum of care. Our Level II Trauma Center, as well as our hospital, provides the services you need for each step of your recovery.

What is a Level II Trauma Center?
We're a Level II trauma center— the highest level of trauma care available in South Mississippi and the only one in the Pine Belt. What does that mean for you? Dr. Duncan Donald, Medical Director of Surgical and Trauma Services at Forrest General Hospital, explains what makes us a Level II trauma center and how we're always ready to respond.

Emergency Room Protocols
Dr. John Nelson, Emergency Medical Director, explains common ER terms such as red area, blue area, alpha and bravo and how our protocols help us stay ready to provide life-saving care.
In 1971, Dr. Richard Clark was part of a group that recognized the need for an efficient emergency services system in south Mississippi, especially in rural areas. He reflects on the origins of our trauma system and the challenges they faced, as well as the creation of the Southeast Mississippi Air Ambulance District.
